Exercises for Pediatric Patients after Cardiac Surgery

Exercises for Pediatric Patients after Cardiac Surgery

Pediatric Meaning - relating to the branch of medicine dealing with children and their diseases

After cardiac surgery, physical therapy is crucial to the recovery of pediatric patients. The child must begin the exercises as soon as possible after cardiac surgery. Pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery are given some exercises by the physical therapist to get them ready for the procedure. After surgery, patients are required to perform these exercises in order to aid in their recovery and maintain clear, expanded, mucus-free lungs.

The main goals of doctors of physiotherapy treatment in Pune are chest care and general mobility. A physiotherapist must be consulted prior to cardiac surgery. Exercises that need to be done both before and after the procedure are guided and taught by him. This blog post's purpose is to highlight a few exercises that will aid pediatric patients in their recovery from cardiac surgery.

  • Exercise Plan:

A physiotherapist is a medical specialist with training in movement disorders prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. While in the hospital, pediatric patients should begin performing the exercises as soon as possible. In order to ensure that the child sits or stands straight and does not lean forward or to the side, the posture is constantly examined during the day.

  1. Sit in a chair with feet on the floor.
  2. Sit or stand up straight, with the shoulders pulled back and down.
  3. Shoulders should be stacked above the hips and should not be arching the back.

Healing of the breastbone typically takes three months. Therefore, the child should refrain from pushing through his or her arms to prevent stress on the breastbone. For the next three months, it is advised that he or she get out of bed or a chair by shuffling the bottom while placing his or her hands on the knees.

  • Care for the chest:

Physiotherapy Baner for the chest begins the day after surgery.  Discomfort or pain from the chest wound may prevent the child from inhaling deeply and coughing. For the first few days, the child may be less mobile than usual, making it difficult for him or her to breathe deeply. If the child is taught deep breathing exercises prior to surgery, it will be easier for him or her to recall these activities afterward.

  • Exercise for Breathing:

  1. The children will be taught how to practice deep breathing by the physio.
  2. The child is made to sit upright with hands on the side of his or her chest. Then he will be asked to take a deep breath through his or her nose and hold the breath in for one to two seconds and then release the air out slowly through his or her mouth. Then the same will be repeated 5-6 times and huffed 5-6 times.
  • Coughing:

  1. Take a deep breath in and cough strongly, using a small pillow to support the chest wound. After coughing, take a few deep, relaxing breaths, children can develop deep breathing by blowing bubbles and older children can practice deep breathing with an incentive spirometer.
  2. When the child is awake and breathing on their own after surgery, it is critical to begin the exercises.
  • Tuck Chin:

  1. To encourage healthy posture, avoid forward chin posture, as it might cause neck strain.
  2. Maintain proper posture while sitting. Sit up tall and bring your shoulder blades towards the middle of your spine and focus on bringing the chin back so the neck is long while holding this position.
  3. Hold for 5-10 seconds to feel the stretch, then repeat 5-10 times.
  • Rolls of the shoulders:

  1. Maintain proper neck position while improving shoulder movement.
  2. Maintain proper posture while sitting. Slowly and gently roll the shoulders forward and backward in circles, then relax and do this 5-10 times.
  • Raise your arms:

  1. Maintain proper posture while sitting.
  2. Sit up tall and draw your shoulder blades to the center of your spine then lift one arm till the elbow is next to the ear, then drop the arm do it 5 to 10 times, and Repeat with the opposite arm.
  3. Raise both arms straight up over your head, after that, bring both arms back and down and repeat it 5–10 times.
